Your roof keeps you warm, dry and protected against critters. This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to remain vigilant about its maintenance in the event of a strong storm. Repairing your roof after a storm is a task best left to professionals, but there are a few warning signs you can spot after a strong storm blows through. Summer and winter are two seasons in particular that can cause damage to your roof, so here are a few signs to look for before you call a professional.
Summer Storm Damage
Wind, hail and rain can severely damage your roof and can cause the following issues:
- Chipped or missing shingles
- Damaged gutterwork or drainage system
- Damage to fascia
- Damaged flashing
- Tree falling on roof/structural damage
- Interior leakage/water damage
- Walk around the perimeter of your house to check for debris. This may include missing shingles, granules, flashing, metal or fallen trees.
- Check the interior ceiling and walls of your rooms for water staining. Water damage is usually indicative of moisture in the attic which can be caused by a number of weather related factors.
- Take pictures and notes of any damage you find to relay to your insurance company or contractor. Prompt attention to storm damage can prevent further deterioration or property loss.
Winter Storm Damage
Winter storms can pose some unique threats to your roof, including:
- Heavy snow putting strain on roof framing — Snow can weigh down your roof and burden old lumber framing. Make sure to keep your roof clear of snow after a storm, if possible, but if possible please avoid climbing on top of your roof to accomplish this. If your roof appears to have a warped slope after heavy snow is cleared, you’ll want to call a contractor to begin repair work.
- Ice dams — Ice dams are frozen chunks that form in your gutter and the gaps in your roof where water is allowed to pool. Ice dams can cause serious damage: they can warp your gutters and render them useless, or break apart shingles and force moisture into your home. Look in your gutters and check your roof for excessive ice buildup. If this has happened, call a contractor to discuss having it removed and prevention in the future.
